Best Restaurants in Souq Waqif: 9 Places Worth Your Appetite

How we chose these restaurants

We only included restaurants inside Souq Waqif or right on its edge, so you can walk from the shops to your table. Each one is popular with locals and visitors alike, has a menu you can’t easily find elsewhere in Doha, and serves the dishes it’s known for consistently

1. Argan: the Michelin pick

Argan was awarded a Bib Gourmand in the first MICHELIN Guide Doha (2025). The award goes to restaurants offering great quality at good value. It sits in the Al Jasra Boutique Hotel, on a quiet pedestrian street at the edge of the souq, in a riad-style dining room.

Order: a slow-cooked tagine, couscous and Moroccan mint tea.

2. Parisa: the most beautiful room in Doha

You walk through a mirrored archway into a two-floor dining room with hand-painted Persian artwork, mosaics, chandeliers and thousands of tiny mirrors. The cooking is traditional Persian with a modern touch.

Order:

  • the signature lamb rack, Taj Barreh;
  • ghormeh sabzi, a herb stew;
  • fesenjan, a walnut and pomegranate stew;
  • mirza ghassemi, a vegetarian dish of smoked aubergine.

Tip: book ahead, especially on weekends

3. Damasca One: Syrian mezze for the whole table

Damasca One is in the heart of the souq, with indoor and outdoor seating that’s perfect for people-watching in winter. It’s a go-to for groups who want to share.

Order: a mixed grill platter, fried kibbeh and fatteh, and plenty of mezze.

4. Shay Al Shoomos: breakfast the Qatari way

This small, family-run café is owned by Shams Al Qassabi, who is often described as the first woman to start a business in the souq. The walls are covered in photos of famous visitors.

Order:

  • regag, a paper-thin bread, with cheese and honey;
  • balaleet, sweet saffron vermicelli topped with egg;
  • eggs with tomato;
  • a cup of karak tea.

Tip: come in the morning. It closes in the afternoon and reopens in the evening.

5. Bandar Aden: the best value in the souq

Bandar Aden is a casual Yemeni institution, where tables share mounds of rice, slow-cooked meats and sizzling stews served with fresh bread. It’s ideal if you want to eat well without spending much.

Order: a rice and meat platter to share, and one of the stews.

6. Danat Al Bahar: pick your fish, they grill it

At this seafood spot you choose your fish from the display and it’s priced by weight, then cooked the way you like.

Order: grilled hammour, fried squid or grilled sea bass.

7. The Village: easy for families

The Village has both indoor and outdoor seating and a long Turkish and Middle Eastern menu, so there’s something for everyone.

Order:

hünkar beğendi, lamb on a smoky aubergine purée;

imam bayıldı, a vegetarian stuffed aubergine dish.

8. Layali Al Qahira: a taste of Cairo

A relaxed Egyptian restaurant that’s good for a slower dinner after shopping.

Order: lamb chops, oven-baked chicken, and a fresh guava juice.

9. Al Aker Sweets: save room for kunafa

Near the souq’s famous giant golden thumb statue, Al Aker is the place for warm cheese kunafa: shredded pastry soaked in rose-scented syrup. It also sells dozens of other Arabic sweets to take home.

A simple Souq Waqif food crawl

  2. Dinner: Argan, Parisa or Damasca One.
  3. Walk: the spice and falcon souqs.
  4. Dessert: kunafa at Al Aker Sweets.

Planning your visit

  • Getting there: take the Doha Metro Gold Line to Souq Waqif station. If you drive, use the underground Souq Waqif car park (fees apply).
  • Best time: from late afternoon into the evening. Many shops close around midday and reopen at about 4 pm, while restaurants stay open later.
  • Best season: November to March, when it’s cool enough to sit outside.
  • Book ahead: for Thursday and Friday nights, especially at Parisa and Argan.
  • Ramadan: opening hours change. Many places open for iftar and stay open late into the night.
  • Hours: individual restaurants set their own times, so check before you go.
