Introduction

The inland sea beach is at Khor Al Adaid, in the far southeast of Qatar, roughly eighty kilometres south of Doha on the border with Saudi Arabia. You drive south on paved roads to Sealine, then cross the open dunes by four-wheel-drive to reach the water.

That last stretch is what makes the trip special, and what makes it tricky. There are no signposts, no tarmac and no facilities once you leave the road. In this guide, Discover Arabia shows you exactly where the inland sea beach is, the route from Doha step by step, and the safest, simplest way to get there

Where Is the Inland Sea Beach? Location and Map

The inland sea beach sits on the shores of Khor Al Adaid, a tidal lagoon in Al Wakrah Municipality at the southeastern corner of Qatar. Seawater from the Arabian Gulf flows through a long channel into the desert, and the beach forms where tall dunes slide down into the lagoon. Saudi Arabia lies just across the water.

Key landmarks on the way:

  • Al Wakrah – the coastal town you pass as you leave Doha
  • Mesaieed – the industrial city and last major town before the desert
  • Sealine Beach – the meeting point for desert safaris, where the paved road ends
  • The southern dunes – open sand with no road between Sealine and the inland sea
  • Khor Al Adaid – the inland sea beach, on the Qatar–Saudi border

How to Get to the Inland Sea Beach From Doha

The whole journey has two halves: an easy highway drive south, then an off-road crossing of the dunes.

  1. Doha to Al Wakrah. Leave Doha heading south on the coastal road toward Al Wakrah and the airport side of the city.
  2. Al Wakrah to Mesaieed. Continue south toward Mesaieed. This is the last town with fuel stations and shops, so stock up here.
  3. Mesaieed to Sealine Beach. Follow the signs for Sealine Beach Resort. This is where safari vehicles gather and where the paved road ends.
  4. Sealine to the inland sea beach. Drivers lower tyre pressure for the sand, then cross the dunes on unmarked tracks to Khor Al Adaid.

How long does it take? The trip from Doha is around an hour and a half each way. Roughly half is highway and half is dune driving, depending on sand conditions and photo stops

Driving Yourself? Safety Rules for the Dunes

Self-driving to the inland sea beach is only for confident off-road drivers. The dunes shift with the wind, tracks are unmarked and phone signal can be weak. If you go, follow these rules:

  • Never go alone. Travel in a convoy of at least two four-wheel-drives, led by someone who knows the route.
  • Check your rental contract. Many rental companies forbid off-road driving, and insurance often does not cover it.
  • Lower your tyre pressure at Sealine and reinflate before returning to the highway.
  • Carry recovery gear: air compressor, tow strap, shovel, spare tyre and traction boards.
  • Start with a full tank and download offline maps before leaving Mesaieed.
  • Watch the tide. Some tracks run close to the waterline and can flood at high tide.
  • Respect the reserve. Khor Al Adaid is a protected nature reserve, so stay on existing tracks and take all rubbish home.

What to Bring to the Inland Sea Beach

The beach has no shops, toilets, shade or lifeguards, so pack:

  • Plenty of drinking water and snacks
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes
  • A light jacket for cool winter evenings
  • A charged phone or power bank
  • A rubbish bag to carry everything back out

Best Time to Visit and How Long to Stay

The most comfortable months are November to April, when days are warm and evenings are cool. In summer, midday heat makes the dunes tough going, so tours shift to early morning or late afternoon.

  • Morning trips bring softer heat and bright light for photos.
  • Afternoon trips end with sunset over the inland sea beach, the most photographed moment of the day.
  • Overnight camping lets you see the stars and wake to sunrise over the water.

A half-day is enough to cross the dunes, swim and take photos. Choose a longer trip or an overnight stay if you want time for sandboarding, a buggy ride or simply relaxing by the water. For seasonal planning, see our guide to the best time to visit Qatar.
