Purple Island Visitor Guide: Al Khor’s Mangrove Escape

Just north of Doha, the city noise fades into silver water, green mangroves and wide desert sky. Welcome to Purple Island, one of Qatar’s most loved natural escapes and the calmest place in the country to pick up a paddle.

This guide covers everything you need for a perfect visit: the island’s remarkable story, how to get there, the best time to go, and how to explore its mangrove channels by kayak with Discover Arabia.

What is Purple Island?

Purple Island, known locally as Jazirat Bin Ghanim and also called Al Khor Island, sits in a sheltered bay beside the town of Al Khor on Qatar’s northeast coast. It is a low, peaceful landscape of limestone outcrops, salt marshes and dense mangrove forest, linked to the mainland by a simple earth path.

Where the name comes from

The island earned its name from one of the oldest stories in the Gulf. During the Kassite era, more than three thousand years ago, people here crushed vast numbers of murex sea snails to make Tyrian purple, the precious dye once worn by royalty. Archaeologists found millions of crushed shells on the island, and it is considered one of the earliest known sites of shellfish purple-dye production anywhere in the world. It is also Qatar’s only archaeological site from that period

The mangroves

Today the island is best known for its grey mangroves, which line its eastern shores and form a maze of quiet, shallow channels. These trees filter the water, shelter young fish and crabs, and attract herons, flamingos and other wading birds. Paddling through them feels a world away from the city skyline.

Getting there and when to go

Getting there from Doha

Purple Island lies roughly fifty kilometres north of Doha, an easy drive of under an hour along Al Khor Coastal Road. Parking is a short walk from the water’s edge. If you would rather skip the drive, Discover Arabia offers optional hotel pickup and drop-off with every kayaking tour.

Best time of year

The most comfortable months are October to April, when days are warm and evenings are cool. In the hotter months, plan around early morning or late afternoon

Best time of day

  • Sunrise: cool air, glassy water and soft golden light, perfect for photographers and early risers.
  • Sunset: orange and pink skies over the mangroves and a relaxed evening mood, ideal for couples and families.

The mangrove channels depend on the tide and the season. When water levels drop, some routes become too shallow to paddle, so always check availability before you set out.

Things to do on Purple Island

Mangrove kayaking

The best way to experience the island is from the water. Calm, sheltered channels make it ideal for first-timers, and a guide leads you deep into the mangroves where walkers cannot reach. Choose a Sunrise Kayaking tour for cool morning light, or a Sunset Kayaking tour for a golden evening on the water.

Walking and exploring

Follow the earth path across the shallows and wander among the low limestone hills. From the higher ground you get wide views over the bay, the mangroves and the Al Khor shoreline.

Photography

Reflections in still water, twisting mangrove roots and colourful skies make Purple Island a favourite with photographers. Sunrise and sunset give the softest light.
